"I never see obstacles...only challenges to take on," says Virgins, Saints & Angels designer Cheryl Finnegan, whose journey from high-end fashionista to the simple yet extraordinary artisans of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, has an air of destiny. "I moved to Mexico City. I just had this huge change of life. I left Levis, left the city, left a marriage. I changed everything all at once and went to this itty bitty town in Mexico. I was struck by...fireworks during the festival celebrating Guadalupe's birthday just a few days after I had made my first few belt buckles with her image...The Virgin Guadalupe is everywhere, Mexico’s people are so open to her, they wear her, she’s on everything." Ranging from belt buckles to rosaries, necklaces to key chains – all of the pieces in this beautiful, spiritual line are handmade by an extended family of 32 craftsmen. VSA utilizes local resources: scraps from a nearby motorcycle leather supplier, hand blown glass, recycled beads and hand-painted medallions – all symbols of San Miguel’s passion and culture. “It’s not about religion,” says Finnegan, “it’s about finding your own personal inspiration, whether it is art, love, or anything that you hold close to your heart.” It was with that idea that VSA created a roster of spiritual goddesses, ranging from such iconic females as Eve, Frida Kahlo and the Virgin of Guadalupe, both religious and secular, in order to inspire every human being.
"There is something about this small little puebla, a "colonial-jewel of a village" which captured my heart and soul" says Cheryl. This amazing line of jewelry has captured the hearts of regular women and men and celebrities such as Madonna, Alanis Morissette, Jessica and Ashley Simpson, Dave Navarro, Mickey Rourke, Martina McBride and Usher. Recently VSA has been featured on the Real Housewives of New Jersey.
