BlueBee to Present an Efficient, Accelerated BWA-MEM at ReConFig 2016

ReConFig 2016 is a leading forum for both researchers and engineers for the exchange of information around reconfigurable computing and FPGA technology, which is taking place November 30 to December 2 in Cancun, Mexico. A great opportunity not only to soak in the sun, but also to take in the recent advancements and innovations around a whole spectrum of topics ranging from hardware architecture and devices to custom computers and high performance systems.

We are pleased to have the opportunity to present our paper Power-Efficiency Analysis of Accelerated BWA-MEM Implementations on Heterogeneous Computing Platforms at this forum. The focus of this study is on the power-efficiency and performance of high performance computing methods used to process extreme-scale genomics data. Ernst Houtgast, Software / Hardware Engineer in the core development team of BlueBee, will present a version of the popular BWA-MEM read mapper that utilizes a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA to accelerate the Seed Extension phase, resulting in overall 2.0x better performance and up to 2.1x higher power-efficiency as compared to software-only execution. This achievement is particularly relevant and timely since fewer resources and therefore lowered costs translate into expedited genomic interpretation, which in turn is a critical component especially on the clinical side, where time can be of the essence.
